(WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- A helicopter crashed into Cedar Lake Monday afternoon in Northwest Indiana, but all aboard survived, officials said.
The aircraft went down around 1:30 p.m. Witnesses said the helicopter was flying low before crash-landing in the water.
"All individuals are out of the water with no reported injuries," the police arm of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources said on social media.
Video posted online showed the two-seat helicopter, with two people on-board, flying low over the lake and it appeared that the pilot set the chopper down on the water.
When the blades hit, the craft spun around and sank.
Cedar Lake Deputy Police Chief Carl Brittingham was a witness.
He said he saw the “small Robinson R-22 helicopter flying low over the lake.
He said he “observed the aircraft go low just above the water and move towards land on the east side of the lake” and “then observed as the aircraft hit the water's surface and spun out of control.”
He immediately radioed for assistance and said the two people onboard were able to swim safely to shore.
They were reportedly trying to land at their lakefront property, and wind may have been a factor.
A crane boat was used to recover the chopper.
The FAA is investigating.
