Homewood Acres firehouse 'all but destroyed' by vandals over Memorial Day weekend

HOMEWOOD ACRES (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - Members of the volunteer fire department in south suburban Homewood Acres are assessing damage - and cleaning up - after vandals "all but destroyed" their firehouse over the Memorial Day weekend.

The vandals were caught on surveillance video. Four kids who appeared  to be in their early teens or younger. To say they trashed the place would be an understatement.

The Chief, Bryan Rouson, who's been with the department for 46-years, spoke to CBS 2.

"At this point I think we'd be better off if they'd burned it to the ground…We've put a lot of time in here, blood sweat and tears, all to make the community better. They took that away from us," said Rouson.

The damage is estimated at more than 100-thousand dollars.  Video shows the vandals using hammers, spending hours at the firehouse. The kids had hammers. As one member put it, "if it could be broken, they broke it.

Insurance will cover much of it and the trucks were in a different building and not damaged.

The department has a Go Fund Me campaign, listed as "Rebuild Our Department."
