As City-imposed water shutoff nears, Blue Island residents speak up: 'This is…inhumane'

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Residents of Forest View mobile home park in Blue Island showed up to a City Council committee meeting Wednesday night to demand answers about their water service, which is slated to be shut off on Monday.

The City said Forest View’s property owner hasn’t regularly paid the water bill for more than two years. Mayor Frank Bilotto told residents that the most recent payment was eight months ago.

“It’s not a decision the city makes lightly. We are painfully aware of the human impact of these decisions, but all of us were elected to protect the interests of the city as a whole.”

Despite the fact that the looming water shutoff wasn’t on the agenda for Wednesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting, those who call Forest View home made sure the committee heard their concerns.

“While your kids can sleep in your beds during Thanksgiving, my kids will be homeless," said one resident.

Many residents wanted to know why the City didn’t inform them sooner that the water bill wasn’t current, reported CBS 2.

“This is pretty inhumane of the City of Blue Island, not letting us, residents, know,” one woman said.

The property owner, who owes about $900,000 — according to Blue Island officials — was not at the meeting. Residents of Forest View left Wednesday’s meeting with no resolution.
