CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Nearly three years after Jussie Smollett claimed he was attacked in a hate crime, his trial on charges he staged the ordeal has been slated to begin Monday.
Jury selection is expected to start at 9 a.m. at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse before Judge James Linn.
There will be no cameras in Linn’s courtroom, no live stream nor overflow room during the trial, which is expected to last about four or five days.
Smollett is accused of lying to Chicago police about what he said was a racist and homophobic attack in Streeterville in January 2019.
The Cook County State’s Attorney’s office initially filed but then dropped a month later charges of filing a false police report against the 39-year-old actor.
The six disorderly conduct charges Smollett faces were filed in February 2020 and came after an investigation by special prosecutor Dan Webb.
The Osundairo brothers, who were extras on Smollett’s former TV show “Empire,” are expected to testify that he paid them to stage the attack.
