CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - There was another heated discussion at a community meeting Wednesday night about the City of Chicago’s plans to house migrants, this time at a hotel in Kenwood.
Fifth Ward Alderman Desmon Yancy attempted to bring the conversation level back down amid clear frustration from residents about the plan to move roughly 300 migrants into the Lake Shore Hotel at 49th and DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
“In this room, can we have a respectful discussion? Because, as long as we’re yelling and as long as we’re screaming…” Yancy said.
Many of those attending the meeting at the Promontory in Hyde Park were upset with the decision to send more than 13,000 migrants and asylum seekers to Chicago in the last year.
“It’s an example of the rich people trying to pit get Black and white against Latinx, and they want us to fight each other,” one woman said.
Others decried the lack of notice and timeline for how long the migrants would be staying, as the City aims to move them out of police stations.
