(WBBM NEWSRADIO) - The democratic primary race for Cook County Sheriff is now a two-man contest after the state Supreme Court declined to take up the case of a challenger to Sheriff Tom Dart.
Carmen Navarro Gercone learned from the Illinois Supreme Court that her campaign is over.
“In one sentence the appeal is denied,” Navarro Gercone told CBS 2.
Under a new state law a deputy is not the same as a sworn police officer. And to be Sheriff, she needs that piece of paper.
“My 28-year career in law enforcement means nothing because I don’t have a piece of paper. A piece of paper that wasn’t required prior to January 1 of this year,” Navarro Gercone added.
Sheriff Tom Dart challenged her candidacy but his campaign said he had nothing to do with the new law. He claims he wasn’t even aware of it until it was signed into law.
Gercone questions how it was that he received the certification weeks before it became a requirement.
