CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- People who use the outbound Kennedy are getting an extended tour of the Northwest Side on Monday morning, as police continue to investigate a deadly overnight crash. Roads were reopen Monday morning, but delays continued.
One person died and three people were taken to hospitals and are expected to survived following in a seven-vehicle crash late Sunday on the Kennedy Expressway on the Northwest Side.
According to Illinois State Police, the crash happened around 11:15 p.m. in the outbound lanes near Sayre Avenue.
Police said the crash involved a semi truck and six other vehicles. The cause of the crash hasn’t been released.
A witness told CBS 2 the truck had hit the cars that had slowed down for road work at close to full speed.
“I’m pretty sure the truck had to be coming at least 70 miles per hour because it was so instant,” Jairo Pachon told CBS 2. “Every car around me got hit.”
Pictures posted to social media showed the truck and at least one car caught fire after the crash.
All outbound lanes were closed until 6:40 a.m., state police said.
