Large crowd gathers for vigil paying tribute to 6-year-old Palestinian-American boy murdered in alleged hate crime
PLAINFIELD (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - It was a standing room only crowd Tuesday night at a vigil for the Palestinian-American boy allegedly murdered by his landlord.
The full gym at the Prairie Activity and Recreation Center in Plainfield was a moving tribute to Wadea Al-Fayoume. CBS-2 reported his uncle Mahmoud Yousef sat at the front of the gym with the boy's father next to a picture of the smiling child who had just turned six this month.
"I'm overwhelmed because we thought we were going to come here to see a Muslim-only unity. But, what I saw here is surprising me, and thank you," Yousef said.
The group American Muslims Assisting Neighbors organized the event that it said was to celebrate the life of the boy and make sure this does not happen again.
Wadea's mother was not able to attend. She is still recovering from stab wounds from Saturday's fatal attack in which prosecutors said Joseph Czuba stabbed Wadea 26 times because of his faith.
