Indiana State Police warns motorists to ‘avoid I-65’ as snow creates ‘treacherous’ driving conditions

INDIANAPOLIS (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – A large stretch of Interstate 65 in Northwest Indiana looked like a disaster zone at sunrise. Cars and trucks involved in crashes and slide-offs Thursday afternoon and night were still there.

Indiana State Police Sergeant Glen Fifield said he wouldn’t be surprised if there were more than 100 vehicles involved in crashes in the afternoon and overnight.

Fifield confirmed that some people spent the night on I-65 after either being involved in crashes or stuck behind them.

"That's what I've been told. But I have been told that and I understand the post has received a phone call stating that,” Fifield said.

Most of the crashes occurred along a fifty mile stretch of I-65 south of Lake County.

"We are encouraging everyone to avoid I-65 altogether. We're going to be having more weather this afternoon. It's treacherous driving, so if you choose to travel on I-65, there's a really good chance you're going to wind up stranded, stuck in traffic and it could wind up hours and hours,” Fifield said.
