KENOSHA, Wisc. (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin State Police are seeking to identify the snowmobilers seen driving on I-94 during the snowstorm on Saturday night.
The Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department said if the public has any information on those individuals, they should contact them.
The snowmobilers were captured on state Department of Transportation video and cellphone video shot from a car.
"These guys are fools. Crazy as hell in Kenosha."
The video showed two snowmobiles pull up next to a car near the sign for the Richard Bong State Recreation Area, and one of the riders waves before they speed off passing other cars. A third snowmobile passes as well.
“It’s not a smart thing to do, people should not do that, it may look cool, but please do not do that,” Cpt. Anne Maxson of the Wisconsin State Patrol told CBS 58. “Keep the snowmobiles on the trails where they belong, not on the highways.”
Arlyn Baumgarten, the trail master for the Kenosha County Snowmobile Alliance, said you have to be an idiot to do that.
“Anything negative doesn’t help the sport,” Baumgarten told CBS 58. “When I first saw it I said, my God, what’s wrong with those [people], you got to be an idiot to run a snowmobile on an interstate highway.”
The act is also illegal. Driving a snowmobile on a federal motorway can land people at minimum a $200 fine and potentially criminal charges if it leads to injury, a crash, or death.
Snowmobiles were also reported on I-294 in Illinois during the storm.
