CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A community meeting in Roseland Wednesday night to discuss possible plans for housing migrants brought out so many people they couldn’t all fit.
Dozens of people stood outside Sheldon Heights Church, not far from the vacant lot at 115th and Halsted that could be used as a tent camp.
Of those who could fit inside, this resident shared frustration that construction hasn’t already begun at the site, which is supposed to be a housing and retail development.
“I want to be clear, it is not that we don’t empathize with their situation, as historically marginalized and oppressed people, but we are saying as a community that we will not wait,” she said.
CBS-2 attended the meeting hosted by 21st Ward Alderman Ronnie Mosley, who was pressed for answers.
Mayor Brandon Johnson has asked each alderman for two to three site options in their ward to move migrants and asylum seekers out of police stations. Mosley said he doesn’t know of any that work.
