CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Monday is the final day of early voting in Cook and the collar counties, and election officials in Cook County said they’ll be seriously looking at turnout as they plan for future elections.
Voting by mail is up strongly in Cook County, but in Cook, Kane, and DuPage counties early voting in person has been slow.
Cook County Clerk Karen Yarborough said this is in spite of officials doing everything they can to make voting easier and more accessible. So, she said, they will be counting how many people actually go to the polls on Tuesday.
"What we have to think about going forward certainly is, okay we will look at these numbers and if we see so much of a downtick, we are going to have to roll back some judges, roll back some places where people will vote," Yarborough said.
Yarborough said it’s expensive to run consolidated elections. She even put out a video showing how much machinery and supplies her office must move ahead of Election Day. And they have to plan.
