Three-year-old boy helps Markham police nab murder suspect

MARKHAM (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A man who moved to Indiana after allegedly committing a murder in Markham nearly a year ago was arrested in an unusual way last week and is being brought back to face the charges.

This is the case that may be solved because a three-year-old boy got his hands on a gun in an apartment in Lafayette last week and fired a single shot, wounding his mother and Trayshaun Smith, who’s wanted for the murder last year of Kenneth Head.

When police responded to a hospital where the two were being treated, they learned about the murder warrant.

Markham Detective Jeff York spoke to CBS-2.

"It is far-fetched. You only see this type of thing in movies, but I'm very thankful for that 3-year-old because, without him, we might have been waiting a lot longer for Trayshaun to be placed into custody."

York said the 3-year-old is a hero because he can now bring closure to the case.
