Ukrainians in Chicago meet at restaurant in Ukrainian Village to discuss Russian invasion

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) – While Russian troops continue to advance through Ukraine, Ukrainians and Ukrainian-Americans in Chicago continue to watch helplessly.

There are an estimated 200,000 people of Ukrainian descent in Illinois, with about 50,000 in Chicago. In fact, one of Chicago’s 28 sister cities is Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine.

In the Ukrainian Village neighborhood on the Near Northwest Side, the Russian invasion is all the talk, especially at a local restaurant Tryzub.

CBS 2 Chicago spoke with people there, including those who grew up in Ukraine.

“It’s like a dream and you really want to wake up and you can’t.  All you can do is sit and watch. My friends, all of my friends from high school are there,” Tanya Pavyvh said.

Oleg Skibo, who grew up in Ukraine, said that the apartment building where his family lives has a bomb shelter below it.  He said it was always a running joke because no one ever thought it would be used.
