Woman who survived hit-and-run crash that killed friend seeks answers from police

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) -- Three weeks after a hit-and-run crash that killed a woman in the Lakeview neighborhood, her friend, who survived, is looking for answers from the police.

It's been three weeks since the incident that injured Nahiomy Alvarez and killed her friend, Sophie Allen.

The BMW involved in the crash was left at the scene. The owner is said to be known to authorities; and the sound of crash was captured on a Ring camera, which also captured who neighbors believe was either the driver or the passenger of the car – running away, CBS 2 reported.

Nahiomy Alvarez told CBS 2 she's still traumatized and still grieving.

"There's something so incredibly tragic about who he killed. Sophie was an amazing human. There was no way to rationalize stealing someone's life in the way they did," she said.

On Saturday, Aug. 14, the driver of the BMW ignored a stop sign at Addison and Fremont streets, hit another car, jumped a curb, and hit the two women.

"You still had weeks to learn about who you killed," she said. "She was a beautiful human."

Alvarez wants to know why nobody has been arrested. She's been told by police to be patient.

"I want someone to tell me that they're working on this – that they're not only working on this, that they're prioritizing it, that it's top of their list, and that we're going to have some peace," Alvarez told CBS 2.
