Should Greenland be renamed 'Red, White and Blueland?'

A bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives that seeks to not only change the name of Greenland, but also authorize the president to acquire the island from Denmark.

The “Red, White, and Blueland Act of 2025,” introduced by Rep. Earl L. “Buddy” Carter (R-GA), proposes renaming Greenland to "Red, White and Blueland," a name that highlights the American flag’s colors.

Rep. Carter’s bill isn’t just about a name change — he’s also backing the idea of the U.S. purchasing Greenland.

The Congressman shared his enthusiasm in a statement, declaring that “America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White and Blueland.” He went on to say that Trump’s efforts to purchase Greenland are rooted in national security.

“President Trump has correctly identified the purchase of what is now Greenland as a national security priority, and we will proudly welcome its people to join the freest nation to ever exist when our Negotiator-in-Chief inks this monumental deal,” the statement said.

President Trump has long regarded Greenland as strategically important for the United States. Despite his public interest in purchasing the world’s largest island, Greenland’s government has been firm in rejecting the notion, with Prime Minister Mute Egede reiterating that the island is not for sale.

However, Trump’s administration has maintained that acquiring Greenland would bolster U.S. strategic positioning in the Arctic region, as well as open up opportunities for resource extraction and military presence.

One poll from January found more than two-thirds of Republican voters would support Trump’s suggested purchase of Greenland -- though it’s unclear how much it would cost to buy the island. Reports estimate it could be worth between $12.5 billion and $77 billion.

Greenland isn’t the only territory Trump has his sights on. He’s also mentioned merging with Canada and taking back the Panama Canal.
