Cubs acquire Willi Castro in a trade with the Twins

(670 The Score) The Cubs acquired utilityman Willi Castro from the Twins in exchange for two prospects just before the trade deadline Thursday afternoon.

Castro, 28, was an All-Star in 2024. A switch-hitter, he's batting .245 with 10 home runs, 27 RBIs and a .743 OPS in 86 games this season.

In return, Chicago traded a pair of minor league pitchers to Minnesota in right-hander Ryan Gallagher right-hander Sam Armstrong. Gallagher, 22, had a 3.43 ERA in 84 split between high-A and Double-A this season. The Cubs selected him in the sixth round of the 2024 MLB Draft. Armstrong, 24, had a 4.62 ERA at Double-A this season. He was a 13th-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft.

Castro is a versatile player who has played every position but catcher and first base during his seven-year MLB career. He has played extensively at second base, left field and right field for Minnesota this season, and he figures to become Chicago's backup center fielder anytime star Pete Crow-Armstrong needs a rest.

Castro is making $6.4 million in 2025 and will be a free agent at the end of the season.

Castro was the Cubs' third addition in the past 24 hours on the trade market. They acquired right-hander Michael Soroka from the Nationals and reliever Andrew Kittredge from the Orioles on Wednesday.

The Cubs (63-45) are one game behind the Brewers for first place in the NL Central.
