Hawkins would fill a role that was previously occupied by Jed Hoyer, who's now the Cubs' president of baseball operations. Hoyer was promoted last November after lead executive Theo Epstein stepped down from his position following nine years with the Cubs.

Hoyer held off on hiring a general manager last year due to limitations presented by the pandemic.

It wasn't immediately clear when the Cubs will make the hiring of Hawkins official.
