The 2021 NFL Draft is just around the corner and the odds are out for the award no one wants. That’s right: Mr. Irrelevant. Eligible players enter the draft hoping it won’t be them but it’s got to be somebody. And the betting odds for which position will receive the honor of being picked last is not the best news for offensive players.
The odds (courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook) that this year’s Mr. Irrelevant will be on Offense are -110, while Defense sits at +100. Odds it will be a Kicker/Punter/ Long Snapper are +1100.
In the past five drafts, the Mr. Irrelevant title has gone to three offensive players and two defensive players. Last year, linebacker Tae Crowder got the honor.
Before him was tight end Caleb Wilson in 2019, wide receiver Trey Quinn in 2018, quarterback Chad Kelly in 2017, and cornerback Kalan Reed in 2016.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers kicker Ryan Succop was Mr. Irrelevant in the 2009 NFL Draft. He was the last player in the Kicker/Punter/Long Snapper category to earn the title. And he just won the Super Bowl with Tampa Bay, so who’s Mr. Irrelevant now??
Whomever is picked last in the draft this year can look to Succop’s career for inspiration and realize that being Mr. Irrelevant doesn’t mean you aren’t on the road to greatness. You can even go from last draft pick to Super Bowl champion. Anything is possible.
