Eric Church had no idea his decision to cancel his show in San Antonio to attend a Final Four basketball game would make the amount of noise it did. While he knew fans would be disappointed, he realized it had a bigger impact than he ever imagined when he saw himself of ESPN’s Sports Center.
LISTEN NOW: Eric Church talks to Rob + Holly about Heart & Soul, his tour and decision to cancel the show
“I love listening to sports radio talk, especially during this time of year, when it’s Final Four time,” Erich Church told Audacy’s Rob + Holly. “I thought it [the decision] might be getting a little noisy when I was watching ESPN Sports Center and I was leading on the Sports Center thing.”
He continued, “I thought, ‘Wow! That’s new. Let’s talk basketball.’ I thought that was getting a little bit out of control.”
Of course social media was in an absolute frenzy as well, but Eric says he has zero access to his accounts, so seeing how big things had exploded was a complete surprise.
“I never pay attention to that [social media comments]. I’ve never been on social media. I’ve never tweeted, I don’t know how to tweet,” he shared. “I don’t get on Instagram — nobody gives me codes for any of this stuff, so I have no way to get on any of this.”
As Eric was being judged and criticized for his decision to attend the once in a lifetime game with his sons and Dad, he felt confident knowing he’d been truthful with his fans. “I’ve always trusted our fans,” he shared. “We’ve been through a lot together. We’ve came 15 or 17 years now and I trusted they would understand, which is the reason I just came clean and told the truth.”
He continued, “C’mon, I could’ve said [I had] COVID, I could’ve said laryngitis, there’s a hundred different things, personal things, but I decided to come out [and say] ‘This is what I’m doin’’”
Eric’s Tar Heels ended up taking home the W over Duke. While they didn’t end up winning the entire tournament, Eric says the win against Duke was just as satisfying.
With March Madness over, Eric is focused on making it up to any fans still willing to come see him play at a special show in New Braunfels, TX on September 2.
If we know anything about the Chief, he takes his relationship with his fans seriously and the show he’ll give them will surely be extraordinary. What exactly that means? We can’t wait to find out!
