Everybody knows about presumed No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence, but what about BYU quarterback Zach Wilson?
Wilson is expected to be selected by the New York Jets with the second overall pick later this month, but what exactly makes him stand out among the rest of the field of quarterbacks behind Lawrence?
On Audacy’s latest episode of “Baldy’s Breakdowns,” NFL analyst and former offensive lineman Brian Baldinger explains to co-host Jason La Canfora what makes Wilson stand out and offered some pretty lofty comparisons.
“He had a great year. When you watch him, there’s not a game that you can put on where there aren’t’ certain throws that just wows you,” he said. “Part of the problem is we’ve been watching Aaron Rodgers do this for a decade and a half. And we’ve been watching Patrick Mahomes make throws like this for the last three years. So, you’re just naturally start drawing comps to those two players the way he throws the football.”
Drawing comparisons to Rodgers and Mahomes is quite the high compliment for any quarterback and ought to have Jets fans smiling from ear to ear.
Baldinger further explained that Wilson checks all the boxes in what you’re looking for in a quarterback.
“You look at his mechanics, you look at his ball-handling, you look at the way he gets rid of the ball, the way he goes through progressions, he’s got everything it takes to be successful at this level,” he said. “I think Joe Douglas and the Jets are very comfortable in what they have seen, and that’s why they’ve jettisoned Sam Darnold.”
