Kim Mulkey is returning back to her Louisiana roots.
After 21 years at Baylor, Mulkey is leaving to become the new women’s basketball head coach at LSU, the team announced on Sunday.
Mulkey, a native of Tickfaw, La., is one of the most successful college basketball coaches of all time. An official press conference introducing her will take place on Monday at 5 p.m.
“Kim Mulkey is a champion and a Hall of Famer, and we are thrilled to welcome her home,” LSU Director of Athletics Scott Woodward said in a statement. “Her accomplishments are unprecedented, her passion is unrivaled, and her commitment to winning in all aspects of life — in the classroom, on the court, and in the community — is unparalleled. We look forward to working with her as she instills that championship culture at LSU.”
Mulkey, who will be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in May, is a six-time national champion and the only person in college basketball history — men or women — to win a national championship as a head coach, assistant coach and as a player and one of three to do it was a player and head coach (Bobby Knight and Dean Smith).
At Baylor, Mulkey led the Lady Bears to three national championships in 2019, 2012 and 2005 as well as four Final Fours, six Elite Eights and five Sweet 16 appearances. The 2005 team was the first women’s sport in school history to win a national title and the 2012 team was the first to finish with a record of 40-0.
Mulkey has won both National Coach of the Year and Big 12 Coach of the Year each eight times and has coached 19 All-Americans, including WNBA star Brittney Griner.
