Matt Harvey did something on Tuesday he has not done in nearly two years: he earned the win in a MLB game.
The Baltimore Orioles right-hander pitched five innings and allowed three earned runs on eight hits but walked none and struck out four in a 7-5 win over the Marlins. It was his first win sicne July 13, 2019.
Since then, Harvey has pitched for three different teams and was 0-5 with an 8.16 ERA in 11 games (eight starts).
“It’s been a while,” Harvey said after the game. “I actually can’t even rember the last one I had…With how last year went and not pitching very well, and getting a chance to come here and play, it means a lot. To be honest, I didn’t know if it was ever going to happen again.”
Harvey was spotted three runs in the first inning before he even took the mound. He allowed an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first. Despite allowing runners on base in each of the innings he pitched (one was via error in the fourth), he never really ran into real trouble until the fifth when he allowed two runs on three singles.
“I thought it was gutty,” Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. “That was a gutty performance. Five innings, had traffic in four of them. He pitched out of innings well. His fastball command wasn’t as good as it has been. But he made pitches when he needed to and left with a 6-3 lead.”
The former Mets ace is now 1-1 with a 5.12 ERA in four starts this season with Baltimore.
