“I Can See You” is one of six “From The Vault” songs released in her Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) album. These were written with the original album, but only fully produced and released with the Taylor’s Version series. “I Can See You” describes a lustful imagination, but Swift had other themes in mind for the music video. During the live premiere at her Kansas City concert, Swift explained that she wanted to depict how she got help to re-record her music, and wanted that help to explicitly come from ex Taylor Lautner.

“Ever since I started re-recording my albums, I always wanted to tell a story visually that symbolically portrayed the ways that you guys have helped me get my music back,” she told her fans, before inviting the actors out on stage. Starring Taylor Lautner, Joey King and Presley Cash, the video depicts an art heist to free a Speak Now-era Swift from being locked in a safe (a clear reference to her masters being owned or entrapped).

Skeptics may be quick to call the reunion a PR stunt since Speak Now was partly inspired by Lautner and Swift’s five month relationship. Yet, they’ll find themselves mistaken, as the ex-couple are now close friends. “He was a very positive force in my life when I was making the Speak Now album,” Swift told the Eras crowd, noting that Lautner also performed his own stunts in the video. “He and his wife have become some of my closest friends,” Swift continued, before joking, “and it’s very convenient because we all share the same first name.”

The camaraderie clearly goes both ways as Lautner took the mic to praise Swift in return. “Taylor, I respect you so much. Not just for the singer you are, the songwriter, the performer, but for the human you are,” he said in front of the crowd, which roared in agreement. “You are gracious, humble, kind, and I am honored to know you.”

With this move, the two are proving that exes actually can be friends while simultaneously rewriting the overdone “Taylor Swift writes about her exes” narrative. Check out the full, action-packed music video below, and yes- Lautner did his own stunts!
