WATCH: Buffalo Police releases bodycam video, investigating officer-involved shooting
Gramaglia: The person involved had a pellet gun
Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo Police has released video from last Saturday's officer-involved incident. They say an investigation into the matter is ongoing, noting it's standard procedure for such an incident.
Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia says officers were called to the 500 block of Tonawanda Street early Sept. 23 for a suicidal man who had ingested numerous pills.
"The call, at this point, escalated at the individual either may have a gun or took possession of a gun," said Gramaglia in a briefing on Friday.
Gramaglia says officers entered the residence and were looking for the individual, who made their way up to the third floor attic. It was there where officers encountered an individual who had a long gun pointed underneath his chin.
Gramaglia says the officers began giving commands for the individual to drop the gun, and gave numerous commands to the individual.
"After numerous commands, the individual had not dropped a weapon and one of the officers discharged your firearm struck the individual one time in the shoulder neck area," Gramaglia said.
Gramaglia says the man shot suffered non-life threatening injuries, and is recovering at Erie County Medical Center. He says the weapon turned out to be a pellet gun.
The officer who fired the shot was identified as Kareem Johnson. He has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
The Erie County District Attorney's Office has started an investigation, which is also standard procedure.
