Rally held to ditch Kensington tunnel, restore Humboldt Parkway

"We’re not settling for anything less than the right thing"

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A noisy rally was held Saturday in Buffalo calling to ditch the planned $1 billion Kensington tunnel project in favor of filling a portion of the expressway in, and restoring the original state of Humboldt Parkway, which would reconnect Delaware and MLK parks.

We are Women Warriors sponsored the rally that featured signs touting 'No Toxic Tunnel' and various speakers challenging the state's position that a tunnel is the preferred option for the East Buffalo community.

Protesters are calling on the state to conduct a full environmental impact study, allowing for time to determine the viability of the project. "Your approach was wrong, that’s why your design was wrong," said activist Sherry Sherrill.

"Let our politicians listen to us and hopefully we will have a restored Humboldt Parkway," said Betty Jean Grant as she spoke during the Saturday rally.

Organizers said they would only settle for a fully restored parkway and balked at the contention that if the $1 billion in funding isn't spend here it will go downstate. Protesters also pointed to the fact that the annual expense to maintain the proposed tunnel would by $5 million.

"We’re not settling for anything less than the right thing," Grant said.
