USS The Sullivans: Looking better and better
Significant progress has been made in the resurfacing of USS The Sullivans.
Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN)- It's been weeks since the serious listing of the historical USS The Sullivans and positive progress has been made described in a Friday briefing.
"The listing has significantly improved," said Buffalo's US Coast Guard Commander, Captain Lexia Littlejohn. "33 holes were plugged with wooden plugs. A number of additional holes were repaired with marine-grade epoxy. That has enables us to be able to conduct the refloat operation."
"T&T Salvage has prepared a plan to go through this re-float operation. That plan was reviewed and approved by the Salvage Emergency Response Team from the Coast Guard. This plan consists of a number of coordinated actions... pumping actions which we are doing right now which has enabled the ship to be raised and refloated. Those pumps on board, there are 22 pumps on board, they have total pumping capacity of about 70,000 gallons. We are not using all of those pumps at once. They are being operated in a step-wise fashion to conduct the refloat operation in a safe and effective manner." reports Captain Littlejohn.
The Captain also says that from a pollution perspective, there is no longer oil leaking out of the ship and there hasn't been any oil leaking that they've witnessed coming out of the ship during the refloat operation.
The team is still conducting air-monitoring within the ship and there have been no reports of toxic gas coming out of the ship, which they tested for.
A number of experts have been on-site including a marine chemist, a salvage master, a naval architect, commercial divers, dive supervisors, pump operators and environmental response personnel.
"It was an all hands on-deck effort," says President and CEO of the Buffalo and Erie County Naval Park Paul Marzello. "Starting at 0700 after we broke for our morning briefing, we started the dewatering process. The joy of seeing this historic landmark rise out of the water was a very meaningful and poignant time for all of us."
The emergency services done on the ship is projected to conclude early next week according to Captain Littlejohn.
