NEW YORK (WBEN) -- The number of New Yorkers hospitalized with COVID-19 dropped by more than 200 between Tuesday and Wednesday, but still remained above 9,000, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Thursday.
As of Wednesday night, hospitals across New York state were treating 9,055 patients for COVID-19, down by 218 from Tuesday, Cuomo said in a press release Thursday afternoon. A total of 1,560 patients were in intensive care units, and 1,011 were on ventilators, he said.
Of the 224,569 COVID-19 test results that came back in the state on Wednesday, 13,886, or 6.18 percent, were positive, he said.
The state also reported 174 new COVID-19-related fatalities, bringing its death toll to 33,594.
"COVID-19 is continuing to spread across the state, and the footrace continues between our ability to quickly distribute the vaccine — hampered only by supply — and the virus' new strains and new cases," Cuomo said in a statement.
"In the meantime, New Yorkers who aren't yet eligible should stay vigilant as we get through the winter, washing their hands, wearing masks and socially distancing," he added. "The extent of community spread is a function of our actions, and we can slow it down."
