NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A construction worker was killed this morning after being hit by weight from a crane.

The accident happened near the entrance to the Holland tunnel.

A portion of the area was already closed off due to construction overnight.

Around 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning, police say a counterweight on a crane at the construction site became loose and hit Gregory Echavarria, 34, of Brooklyn, a worker at the site.

He was trying to lift the weight into place when the accident occurred.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two others were taken to Lennox Hill for observation.

They suffered minor injuries.

This is the second deadly construction accident this week in the city.

On Monday on the Upper East Side, a piece of stone was knocked loose in an apartment building, and hit and killed a worker there.

Construction accident deaths are far too common in New York.

A report from 2017 indicated that 23 percent of worker deaths in the city involve construction workers.
