NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The signing of the bill renewing the 9/11 Victim Compensation Fund means financial support for those stricken with World Trade Center-related illnesses, and there are more of these patients every day.

There are more than 12,000 9/11-related cancers and a new wave is likely on the way.

"We know that diseases like mesothelioma and lung cancer related to asbestos are lurking. It takes a while for them to develop," said Dr. Jacqueline Moline.

Moline heads the World Trade Center Health Program in Queens.

Other illnesses are being considered for certification.

"There's a concern that there are increased rates of autoimmune diseases," she said.

Neuropathy is another condition being studied.

Dr. Moline says this is why the VCF is so important.
