NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Internet-related issues topped the list of the consumer fraud complaints in New York State in 2019, following by consumer and car complaints.
In a list of the most common complaints released by New York Attorney General Letitia James on Monday, internet-related complaints came in number one, with 4,436 reports. That can include issues related to internet service providers, data privacy, digital media and internet frauds.
Consumer-related complaints, such as those related to banking, immigration and security systems, came in second, with 2,659 complaints. Automobile issues were third, with 2,510.
"This top 10 list not only reflects the numerous ways in which consumers were unfortunately defrauded, cheated, and conned in 2019, but should serve as a warning sign for all consumers as we forge ahead into 2020," James said in a statement.
"Consumers who have helped identify and report issues to our office have been invaluable partners in our efforts to stop deceptive scams and will be vital in our efforts to stop fraudsters dead in their tracks going forward. My office will continue to use every tool at its disposable to protect New York consumers and enforce our laws."
The rest of the list is, in order, landlord/tenant disputes, utilities, credit, retail sales, home repair/construction, mail order and online catalogs, and mortgage.
The Attorney General's office also offered tips to consumer to protect themselves from frauds in every category. Online, they encouraged consumers to ignore messages that a virus is on their computer, to apply all security updates and to change passwords often.
