NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Freshman Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is facing a challenge in the Democratic primary from a former CNBC anchor.

Michelle Caruso-Cabrera announced Tuesday that she is launching a bid for the 14th Congressional District, which includes sections of Queens and the Bronx.

“I am the daughter and granddaughter of working class Italian and Cuban immigrants,” Caruso-Cabrera, who is running as a Democrat, said in a statement. “I am so lucky to have had such a wonderful career and I want everybody to have the opportunity that I’ve had. That’s why I’m running.”

Caruso-Cabrera left her full-time role at CNBC in 2018 and the network said she will no longer appear as a contributor.

Ocasio-Cortez upset 10-term U.S. Rep. Joseph Crowley in New York's Democratic congressional primary in 2018 and later went on to defeat a little-known Republican opponent, making her the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.
