EAST ISLIP (1010 WINS) — A 73-year-old driver was killed in a head-on crash Monday night after driving the wrong direction on the Southern/Heckscher State Parkway.

Roy Nelson was driving a 201 Hyundai Sonata northbound in the southbound lanes of the parkway between exits 44 and 45 in East Islip around 10:30 p.m. when he slammed into a 2020 Tesla.

Both motorists were taken to South Shore University Hospital after the crash.

Nelson was pronounced dead, but officials said the other victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

A preliminary investigation found Nelson may have had a medical emergency that caused him to veer into the incorrect lanes.

Law enforcement will continue to investigate the crash.
