NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A sea of green rolled through Midtown on Friday as the St. Patrick’s Day Parade returned to Fifth Avenue for the 262nd year.

The parade kicked off at 11 a.m. at E. 44th Street and Fifth Avenue. It will wrap around 4:30 p.m. at E. 79th Street and Fifth Avenue. See street closures below.

New York’s parade is the oldest continual St. Patrick's Day parade in the world, first celebrated in 1762.

A long list of organizations were marching, joined by local and state officials like Mayor Eric Adams, Gov. Kathy Hochul and NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell.

Some 250,000 marchers and 2 million spectators were expected to take part, according to organizers. Here's a full list of parade marchers; they included pipe bands and Irish dancers from throughout the New York area.

This year's grand marshal is Kevin J. Conway, the vice chairman of Clayton, Dubilier & Rice.

Speaking with 1010 WINS, Cardinal Timothy Dolan said of the holiday: “It’s sort of the day that everybody says, ‘You know what, as the Irish are celebrating so are we, because we see in them what we rejoice about our own culture.’ In a way it’s kind of a bridge day, where everybody is celebrating.”

This is the second year the parade is back in full form after a two-year pandemic hiatus in 2020 and 2021.

On Friday night, a number of city landmarks were set to be illuminated in green to “recognize the Irish-American spirit of toughness, perseverance and resiliency,” Gov. Kathy Hochul said. They include Grand Central Terminal’s Pershing Square Viaduct, the East End Gateway at Penn Station, Moynihan Train Hall and the Kosciuszko Bridge.
