
NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A drunk driver slammed into the back of a freight truck on a Brooklyn expressway late Wednesday night, killing the passenger in the vehicle, police said.
Authorities say March Dookhan, 30, was speeding on the Gowanus Expressway in a 2013 black 535i BMW sedan when he struck the back of a 2000 white Freightliner truck at the 92nd street exit on the Gowanus Expressway in Bay Ridge around 11:30 p.m.
Police noted that the truck was traveling in the center lane in the westbound lanes, heading towards Staten Island, where Dookhan lives.
Doohkan’s passenger, 30-year-old Karen Diaz, was found unresponsive and unconscious by police officers and was later pronounced dead at the scene. She also lived on Staten Island.
The 30-year-old driver was transported to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, in stable condition, to be treated for his injuries.
Police say Dookhan has been charged with DWI and refusing to a breathalyzer exam at the scene.
According to a police report, the 30-year-old had at least one previous DWI conviction in the last 10 years.
