Gio questioning Frankie Montas trade: 'Is this another Brian Cashman whiff?'

Frankie Montas was knocked around in his Yankee Stadium debut, and has now allowed 14 runs in 14 innings of work during his short Yankee tenure.

Montas’ latest clunker has Gio wondering if trading for the A’s starter is another miss for Brian Cashman.

“Just brutal, and now you’re thinking back to the deadline again and passing up - and I know they were asking for a ton- on Luis Castillo, in a year where you were the best team in baseball for month after month, and going for Montas who was your second choice, and him being awful,” Gio said.

“I understand that first start, the circumstances were tough for him. There was a death, his mother in law had passed away and he had just joined the team. But after that, he has been brutal.”

Gio believes the writing may have been on the wall when it comes to Montas struggling in New York, and while it’s still early, there were red flags before the trade was even made.

“The one thing that scares you is if you look back on his season coming before he came to the Yankees, his road ERA was over 5.00,” Gio said. “His home ERA was spectacular, and we all know how big of a canyon that ballpark is out in Oakland.

“Is this another Brian Cashman whiff at the trade deadline, or bringing in a pitcher that hasn’t worked out? Last night was embarrassing for them.”
