It didn't cost the University of Minnesota anything to fire Richard Pitino.
The Star Tribune has obtained documents that show Pitino's buyout clause was nullified by his nearly immediate hiring at the University of New Mexico.
Gopher Athletic Director Mark Coyle let Pitino go on March 15th. The very next day Pitino was hired by New Mexico.
Pitino was owed $1.75 million if he was fired before April 30th, but a clause eliminated the buyout payment should Pitino find comparable employment elsewhere.
