History in the making this week with the first-ever sanctioned Boys High School Volleyball Tournament

History in the making on the University of St. Thomas campus this week.

Now that it's a sanctioned sport by the Minnesota State High School League, the first ever State Boys Volleyball Tournament is under way and players and fans are excited.

"I feel so special and like, I'm so grateful that all these people work so hard for us to be able to be here right now," says Austin Kue who plays for Park Center.

Lydia's boyfriend plays for St. Paul Central.

"He's been playing boys volleyball since he was freshman year, and I know it meant a lot when it got to be sanctioned as a real estate sport, so it's really cool to see it on this level," she said.

And these guys can definitely bring it.

"They do, they do, they're super gritty," said one fan.

"Absolutely, definitely a lot of athleticism, a lot of speed, a lot of power," said another.

In May of 2023, Boys Volleyball became the 24th sanctioned high school sport in the state of Minnesota. It's been a long time coming and fans are excited they finally have a chance to play on the big stage.

"Oh, it's beyond cool," says Haley McFarlane who is an assistant Athletic Director at St. Paul Central. "I mean, I grew up around boys volleyball. My dad was in the Navy was a really big beach volleyball player and court volleyball player. So I didn't get the opportunity to play. I was a softball player, but it's super fun to see these boys make history here this year."

The eight team tournament concludes Thursday with the championship game at 4:00 p.m. Rogers will take on Eden Prairie in the Class A game.
