Everson Griffen apologizes for deleted tweets roasting Kirk Cousins

Prior to the 2018 season, star defensive end Everson Griffen prasied then-new Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins.

"Kirk... he's a real-life leader. He's out there, he's a vocal leader, he's an excellent football player, he's smart, and he knows the playbook, I feel like, after day one," Griffen told NFL Network. "He's studying. He's a competitor. He does all the right things. He can make all the big throws, the long balls, and I feel like having him plugged in and having a quarterback that we know is going to be there for the next three years, it's major for us.

"I'm excited to have him and I know the team is and the organization is, too."

My, how things can change over time. Two-and-a-half years later, Griffen, an impending free agent who spent 2020 with the Cowboys and Lions, had this to say about Cousins on Twitter in three separate posts:

@Vikings Kirk cousins is ass. Thank you
Ask ZIMMER if he wanted Kirk?????
He will tell you the truth??? Who wanted Kirk cousins???? Take your guess???

Griffen has since deleted and apologized for the tweets.

In the three years that Cousins has been with the Vikings, they have finished with an 8-7-1 record, a 10-6 record and, most recently, a 7-9 record. Only the second season, 2019, has resulted in a playoff berth, which ended in the divisional round against the 49ers.

Minnesota, who still has Cousins signed on for two more seasons at cap hits of $31 million for 2021 and $45 million for 2022, was hoping for a ton from him after he signed what was then the biggest contract in the league (via Spotrac). However, Griffen's Twitter outburst might suggest that there were some other internal conflicts at play.
