Minnesota Third District Congresswoman Kelly Morrison is sharing some unsettling details on how she was impacted during last weekend's violent rampage by the suspect in the case, Vance Boelter.
Morrison told CNN that officers arrived at her home around 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
"They weren't able to be specific then, but just said someone's impersonating a police officer," Morrison explained. "There's some kind of scary things happening. Please do not answer the door to anyone. And it was an hour or two later that I learned the devastating news about Melissa and Mark and I have pretty much been holed up in my home since then with an officer in my driveway."
She calls the incident a scary moment for our country and says she worries about the impact it will have on who will be willing to run for political office.
Morrison was one of several local and Congressional politicians from Minnesota whose names were on a list found in Boelter's vehicle.
"And one of the things I really worry about is that, it will have a chilling effect on who will be willing to run for office," Morrison added. "We want to make sure that good people want to participate in our democracy. This is a scary moment for our country."
Threats to members of Congress are on the rise, security officials told senators on Tuesday at an emergency briefing.
The U.S. Capitol Police’s threat assessment section investigated 9,474 “concerning statements and direct threats” against members of Congress last year, the highest number since 2021, the year that the Capitol was attacked by Trump’s supporters after he tried to overturn his 2020 presidential election defeat to Democrat Joe Biden. Those numbers ticked down in 2022, but have risen again in the last two years, according to an annual threat assessment the department released earlier this year.
In Minnesota, there are also security concerns for officials with Sec. of State Steve Simon working to keep lawmaker data private and calls for increased security - and possibly metal detectors - at the state capitol building in St. Paul.
