A COVID-19 vaccine mandate set to begin December 31 in the City of St. Paul is now the target of a Saint Paul Police Federation lawsuit.

The mandate, which was announced in October by Mayor Melvin Carter, requires all city employees to provide proof of vaccine or be barred from work.

In a lengthy Facebook post, the city's police union wrote their stance isn't because they are "anti-vaccine, nor are conspiracy theorists." The lawsuit alleges the city has yet to meet with them in good faith to discuss changing the policy.

Both the city and the union have been in contract negotiations since the start of the year. The union's request to allow testing or masking for unvaccinated officers was rejected, according to the union.
