If anybody needs to make a zoom call, we know who's got a phone! The Morning Beat's AJ and Mikalah talked to Academy Award winning icon and actress Mira Sorvino in a wide ranging interview that encompassed many topics. Among them, her work in the iconic 90's film Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, growing up with her father, legendary actor Paul Sorvino, her diligent work in the Me Too movement, and her impressive work on Ryan Murphy's Hollywood, currently out on Netflix.
When we discussed her role in Hollywood, Mira tells us it was apparently years in the making. "I met Ryan a few years ago at a party, and I was very surprised to learn that he knew a lot of my filmography." Sorvino stated. "He told my agent, 'I'll find something for us to work on together!'" It would be a few years and a bit of patience before they would get together with Sorvino playing the role of Jeanne Crandall in the Netflix mini-series.
When it came to connecting the strong female roles found in the series to the MeToo movement, the actress doesn't hold back.
"I think that women have the courage to break the rules once they're in a leadership position. To make a choice that is not just competiton and kill your colleagues, let's bring us all up together, everybody benefits when we all rise together and that's the message of this show."
Mira took a look back on her personal life and revealed her father, actor Paul Sorvino's initial thoughts on her becoming an actor. "He did not want me to be an actor. He didn't want any of us Sorvino kids to become actors. He said if there was anything else we would want to do equally, to do that." It wasn't until her 20's that she recieved her father's blessing to act but he would teach her the craft all throughout her childhood.
"He taught me from the time I was eight how to act. He taught me how to cry. He would have me go up to the middle of the staircase, sit there, think about something that made me very sad until I came down in tears and we would do the part of the scene that had the tears. You have to prepare those moments like a birthday cake."
Mira capped off her sitdown discussing the iconic 90's cult film Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion and if fans could expect a sequel. "I sure hope so!" in terms of a reunion. "We've talked about doing it for many years and for some reason it hasn't happened and it's not in our power to greenlight it." However, Sorvino holds out hope for the future and appeals to the fans. "I think the more the public clamors for it and every day there's more (calls for it). There's still this public appetite for it. Funko just came out with our figures of it and that's the first time I've had a doll crafted after myself."
