President Biden announces 2024 reelection bid

President Joe Biden on Tuesday morning officially announced that he is running for reelection in 2024.

The president formally launched his campaign by sharing a three-minute video on social media, asking voters to give him four more years to "finish this job."

"Every generation has a moment where they have had to stand up for democracy. To stand up for their fundamental freedoms. I believe this is ours," Biden said. "That's why I'm running for reelection as President of the United States. Join us. Let's finish the job."

"Personal freedom is fundamental to who we are as Americans. That's been the work of my first term. To fight for our democracy. To protect our rights. To make sure that everyone in this country is treated equally and that everyone is given a fair shot at making it," Biden says in the video before digging into Republicans.

"Around the country MAGA extremists are lining up to take on those bedrock freedoms. Cutting social security that you've paid for your entire life while cutting taxes for the very wealthy. Dictating what health care decisions women can make. Banning books and telling people who they can love. All while making it more difficult for you to be able to vote," he says.

"When I ran for president four years ago, I said we were in a battle for the soul of America. And we still are. The question we're facing is whether in the years ahead, we have more freedom or less freedom. More rights or fewer. I know what I want the answer to be, and I think you do too," the video continues. "This is not a time to be complacent. That's why I'm running for reelection. Because I know America. I know we're good and decent people. I know we're still a country that believes in honesty and respect, and treating each other with dignity. That we're a nation where we give hate no safe harbor."

"Every generation of Americans has faced a moment where they have to defend democracy. Stand up for our personal freedom. Stand up for the right to vote and our civil rights. And this is our moment," Biden says. "Let's finish this job. I know we can, because this is the United States of America and there's nothing, simply nothing we cannot do if we do it together."

Vice President Kamala Harris also shared the same video, saying she would yet again be Biden's running mate.

"As Americans, we believe in freedom and liberty—and we believe that our democracy will only be as strong as our willingness to fight for it," she said. "That's why Joe Biden and I are running for reelection."

Biden's announcement comes exactly four years to the day that he announced his return to politics and declared his intention to run for president during the 2020 election cycle.

The announcement also sets up a potential 2020 rematch in 2024 with former President Donald Trump, who is currently leading the polls for the Republican nominee.
