Congressional Democrats have reintroduced the Equality Act—landmark legislation that would expand federal civil rights protections to LGBTQ+ Americans.
The bill seeks to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity in jobs, housing, education, and more.
Lawmakers say it's a critical response to over 850 anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced in states this year, and a Trump administration aggressively rolling back protections.
Rep. Takano called the bill a declaration of dignity: "We demand not just the right to survive—but to thrive."
Though the bill faces steep odds in a Republican-controlled Congress, advocates say it's a necessary stand for equality.
