ST. LOUIS (KMOX) - Missouri Republican lawmakers have pre-filed more than 20 bills for this legislative session, aimed at restricting LGBTQ rights.
Rabbi Daniel Bogard spent many hours last session driving to Jefferson city to testify against similar bills.
"I have a 10-year-old trans kid," said Bogard. "The really only hard part of having a trans kid is a government that worries us."
Bogard says it truly feels the government is at war with his family.
"It's a handful of wack-a-doodle right-wing folks who have decided a culture war is worth fighting and the body of kids like my kid," said Bogard.
Last session, Missouri led the nation with the number of bills targeting the gay and trans community. However, only two were passed, with most notably, Missouri passing a law banning transition-related care for minors. It went into effect in August.
Missouri has seen a culture war when it comes to LGBTQ rights come at a forefront over the past few months. Most notably, Francis Howell School District was considering a bathroom policy, which would prohibit transgender students from using restrooms that match their gender identity. That faced widespread opposition from both parents and students in November.
Bogard says as culture wars wage in school districts over bathrooms, he says it's usually not the students who care.
"If kids want to go to the bathroom, they should be allowed to go in the bathroom in peace," said Bogard.
