
In spite of the vitriol, hateful rhetoric and misinformation targeting the queer community during the 2024 election cycle, we saw an increase in the number of LGBTQ+ candidates running for office compared to 2020.
More than 1,000 lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans candidates ran Congress, state legislatures and various local races across nearly every state in the nation.
Of the total number of queer candidates, 668 made it to the general election. No surprise that more than 90% of those candidates ran as Democrats. As of this posting the community has chalked up wins in at least 40 states, along with Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. The candidates wew also more diverse than, with 37.6% of candidates being LGBTQ people of color and 15.2% not cisgender.
The LGBTQ+ Victory Fund endorsed and tracked 477 of the LGBTQ candidates who made it to the general election having a success rate of approximately 80%. More here from our friends at NBCOut.com
