The annual State Equality Index for 2023 was released by the HRC Foundation and Equality Federation. The SEI rates all 50 states plus Washington, D.C. in six areas of law and assigns the states to one of four distinct categories. The State Equality Index is the most comprehensive survey of state level commitment to queer equality, including laws and policies that provide advancements and hate crime laws and protections.
Some of the top ranked states include California, New York, Nevada, Illinois, New Mexico, and Virginia. And in the No Surprise Here category, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, North Carolina, and Tennessee, ranked among the lowest.
