LISTEN NOW: Frankie Grande details importance of gay content

The 40-year-old has been a large part of continued  queer advancement in the media with his involvement in various creative ventures but admits the community still has a long way to go. Next step? More representation.

“We need more representation, I want it [gay and drag content] to be everywhere,” he told Channel Q’s Corey Crockett. “I want gay people in commercials. The only time you see gay people in commercials is when it’s for an HIV medicine, like, it’s ridiculous. We need to continue to have more inclusion.”

Grande leads by example with his involvement in educational, inclusive, entertaining queer projects like Broadway musical, Titanique, and film, Summoning Sylvia.

“They’re both very gay and very queer shows that are designed to entertain and be enjoyed by all,” shared Grande. “Our level of inclusion does not exclude the audience from enjoying the show or getting the jokes and I think that’s one of the most remarkable things about the film [Summoning Silvia] and [musical] Titanique.”

He continued, “We are not excluding anybody by being super gay, and that is a thing I think the world is still trying to understand and still struggling with. ‘How can queer content appeal to everyone?’ And I can tell you the answer is there’s two great examples in the world right now. Get your butts into the theater to see Titnique or go ahead and just stream Summoning Silvia and you’ll have the answer. Gay content can be created in a way that it is to be consumed by everyone and is relatable to everyone even though we’re all super gay.”
