Jason Whitlock says race is one reason why Patriots are so hated

Pundit Jason Whitlock is known for going against conventional wisdom. But his opinion on why so many people disdain the Patriots might be his most off-the-wall take yet.

On his FS1 show “Speak for Yourself” Wednesday, Whitlock broke down why the Patriots are the most loathed team in the NFL, if not all of professional sports. He said 50-percent of the animosity is fueled by jealousy, whereas the next 25-percent is predicated on the perception of Patriots subterfuge, from Spygate to Deflategate.

While those are both boilerplate reasons for Patriots hatred, Whitlock’s third and final component of the puzzle is surprising. He says there’s so much animosity against the Patriots, because they’re too white.

Being detested in America for being white. That’s a new one.

“In a league dominated by African-American players, the Patriots are the outliers,” Whitlock explains. “They are the suburban two-parent home team of perceived white privilege. The Patriots are Duke basketball. When you recall the 1970 Pittsburgh Steelers, here’s who you think of: Terry Bradshaw, Chuck Knoll, Franco Harris, ‘Mean’ Joe Greene. Think about the 49ers of the 1980s: Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Bill Walsh and Ronnie Lott. The Dallas Cowboys of the 1990s: Emmitt Smith, Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, Jimmy Johnson and Jerry Jones.

“The Patriots of the last 20 years? Tom Brady, Bill Belichick, Robert Kraft, Rob Gronkowski and Bill Belichick. The Patriots look like Duke. In this era of ‘fake woke,’ it’s cool, and socially acceptable to hate Brady, Gronk and Edelman. It’s like hating J.J. Redick, Grayson Allen and Christian Laettner. Hating the Patriots and Duke is the international signal that you’re pro-black and free of racism.”

While that’s an interesting thesis, Whitlock leaves out the fact that Duke basketball is so hated, because much like the Patriots, they’ve been so good for so long. Many of their star players through the years, such as Grayson Allen, carry themselves in petulant manners as well.

Whitlock nailed his first two explanations for the antipathy leveled against the Pats. The last one is a big stretch.
