Potential Patriots free agent target: Cole Beasley

By Mateo Aycardi

Over the next few weeks, WEEI.com will take a look at a number of free agents who the Patriots could potentially target. Free agency officially begins March 13. Here's a link to previous capsules.

Name: Cole Beasley

Age: 29

Position: Wide receiver

2018 stats: 65 receptions, 672 yards, three touchdowns

The skinny: Beasley came into the NFL as an undrafted free agent out of Southern Methodist University. While his career may not be as glamorous as someone like Golden Tate, there are things in which Beasley excels that make him a viable option for the Patriots to chase in free agency. For starters, he has four seasons in which he posted a 70 percent catch percentage or higher. He is also one of the best bang-for-buck free agents in this year’s free agent class, and should be looking to contribute to a contender as his twilight years are rapidly approaching.

Why he's a fit for Patriots: The Patriots have a history of elevating the play of speedy receivers, ala Wes Welker. Beasley is an even cheaper option for the Patriots to potentially pursue, although his production will certainly not merit top-tier money. After a rough 2017 season that saw him amass a mere 314 yards, Beasley bounced back with a nice 65 reception year in 2018 and has always been a reliable option for Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott.

Bill Belichick is a master at getting the best out of his players, and if Beasley somehow ends up in New England, the Patriots could certainly find a way to use him in its offense.
